A tasty, healthy dish made with raw plantains ! 

Vazhakkai Podimas

Ingredients

  • Raw plantain - 3 to 4

  • Coconut oil

  • Cococnut - grated - ½ cup or so - go by eye

  • Mustard seeds

  • Urad dal

  • Channa dal

  • Jeera

  • Curry leaves

  • Asafoetida

  • Ginger - grated

  • Green chillies - 3-4 or to taste

  • Salt to taste

  • Freshly chopped corainder

  • Lemon - 1 or to taste

Directions

  1. Wash and clean raw plantains - 4 nos.
  2. Remove edges and cut into halves.
  3. Boil plantain halves in water.
  4. Test if cooked by inserting knife. If soft, switch off. Must not over cook.
  5. Outer cover would have changed into a dark shade from green.
  6. Remove from water and let it cool on a plate.
  7. Remove outer skin and grate.
  8. Heat oil in kadai. I prefer coconut oil. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, Channa dal, jeera, curry leaves, chopped green chillies (2-3), grated ginger (1” pc) and hing. Add grated plaintain. Add salt. Mix well. Doesn’t need to cook for long.
  9. Garnish with fresh coconut and chopped coriander. Add Juice of half lemon or 1, depending on the size. Serve !

Vazhakkai podimas

One of my dad's favourite sides, he would always ask me to make this when he visited, or when I went home. For me, this is nostalgia and love. I learnt this from my mil, who is from Tanjore. Have not had this before I got married.
