This is made at my place when tomatoes are plentiful and in season. This is another dish that I learnt from my mil. Never seen it or tasted it before getting married. It’s like rasam and can be had with rice or just as a soup / drink.
Ingredients
- Tomatoes - 1/2 kg approx
- Crushed black pepper - 1/4 tsp
- Crushed cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
- Salt
- Chopped fresh coriander
Directions
- Pressure cook the tomatoes with a little water. 2 whistles. Open once pressure settles. Set the tomatoes to cool.
- Once it’s cool, blend in the mixer. Strain and remove pulp and seeds. The strained liquid must not be too thick or too runny. Add salt to taste.
- Heat gently. Temper with ghee, crushed black pepper and crushed jeera. Garnish with chopped coriander.
The flavour profile for this is just of the tomatoes with a mild heat from the tempering. A good dish to make when tomatoes are in season. I am told that this is called ‘saaru’ in karnataka.
