A new recipe that I tasted for the first time recently at my mom's house. Amma's helper Selvi made this.

A tasty side dish with kada chakka ( bread fruit) and dried peas, that I learnt from Selvi, my mom's nurse.
Ingredients
-
Dry peas -1 cup Kada chakka - 1 cut into cubes Coconut Black pepper corns Jeera Small onions Mk red chilli powder Mk coriander powder Mk coconut oil Salt to taste
-
Kada chakka - medium 1- cut into cubes
-
Grated coconut - 2 cups
-
Black pepper corns - ½ tsp or to taste
-
Jeera - 1 tsp
-
Small onion s- ½ cup
-
Red chilli powder
-
Coriander powder
-
Coconut oil
-
Salt to taste
-
Corainder leaves - chopped
Directions
Soak dried peas overnight
Pressure cook the peas until done. Not mushy. 6 whistles should do.
Open when the pressure settles.
Add the cubed kada chakka to the cooked peas. Add 1 tsp each of red chilli powder and coriander powder. Add salt.
Check if there is enough water to cook. Do not close the cooker. Cook this in an open pot / open pressure cooker.
Grind together 1/2 coconut, a handful of small onions, 1/2 tsp black pepper corns and a tsp of jeera. All raw. No need to roast.
Add this ground paste to the above pot. Let it all cook in medium heat and come together.
Temper in coconut oil - mustard seeds, urad dal, jeera, red chillies, curry leaves. No asafoetida for this.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.
Recipe Note
A variation of the same kari that you can do for chapati, is that just use dry peas ( soaked and cooked) and add a pinch of garam masala to the ground mixture to get an easy Kurma. This was Nalini’s tip. I enjoyed this kari / koottu with rice today. With this, you really don’t need any other gravy. Do try and let me know. As I said, you can try this with just peas as a side for roti, dosa or rice!
