An easy, healthy recipe that can be made with cabbage or chayote squash ! Here I have used Cabbage . There are, of course, variations of this from household to household.
Ingredients
- Sliced cabbage. Slice as thin as you can. A quarter if it’s a medium cabbage or half if it’s a small one.
- Grated Coconut - about a cup / you can reduce if you don’t want it too thick
- Channa dal - 2-3 tbsp. soak at least for an hour.
- ( this is optional and we don’t add it always).
- Green chillies - 1-2 or to taste.
- Jeera - a tsp or so.
- Thick curd - about a cup. You don’t need sour curd for this.
- Coconut oil
- Mustard seeds
- Urad dal
- Red chilli
- Curry leaves
- A pinch of jeera ( I add jeera to a lot of things, irukkattum!)
- Salt to taste
Directions
- Pressure cook cabbage with very little water - 1 whistle. Grind together to a coarse mixture - coconut, green chillies, soaked & drained channa dal, jeera. Add it to the cooked cabbage. Add salt. Let this boil and cook for a few minutes. Once done, switch off and add curd.
- Temper with coconut oil, mustard seeds, red chilli, jeera and curry leaves.
- I don’t boil after curd is added .
Recipe Note
Enjoy! I find this recipe very useful when you have just a piece of cabbage or if the cabbage isn’t very fresh and you don’t want to waste it. We don’t add turmeric powder to this, but you can if you want to. Add it while you pressure cook.
